The UK government is considering plans to house asylum seekers at former military sites in a bid to cut down on the costly use of hotels. The move comes as small boat Channel crossings surpass 30,000 so far this year.

Five migrants were killed and another critically injured when their boat collided with a Turkish coast guard vessel conducting routine patrols off northwest Turkey. One person remains missing.

An exhibition entitled Non è Stato il Mare ('It Wasn't the Sea') in Italy's northern city of Milan from September 4 to 28 focuses on the first ten years of the migrant rescue NGO Sea-Watch.

The Italian Cabinet on September 4 passed a decree law to ensure the “legal and orderly” entry of foreign workers into Italy and to counter illegal employment.
