The Italian Council for Refugees (CIR) has launched an online campaign to promote a reform of the Dublin Regulation, modify the system of hotspots and defend the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in Italy.
The campaign Looking Beyond Borders has been launched to promote change in the current European and national strategies in regard to asylum seekers. In particular, the campaign proposes changes in the Dublin system and in practices adopted at hotspots to guarantee asylum seekers and refugees in Italy their fundamental rights.
Reforming the Dublin system
The organization explained on its website that the campaign means to support the proposal for a reform of the Dublin Regulation III currently being examined by the European Council and vies for a radical change in practices at hotspots in Italy.
The website dedicated to the campaign www.beyondtheborders.eu offers data and information as well as the possibility for associations operating in the sector, volunteers, operators and asylum seekers to report cases and stories so they can be publicized and defended by CIR.
Web campaign for migrants' rights
The project, which is promoted as part of the project by the same name funded by Open Society Foundations, aims to monitor the impact of national and European policies to manage the ''refugee crisis'' in Italy on the lives of asylum seekers. It also aims to raise the public opinion's awareness on the impact of such policies as well as to outline recommendations to change the current legislation and practices at hotspots, relocation procedures and the Dublin system.
The organization would like to obtain a permanent mechanism of redistribution of asylum seekers, conditions at hotspots in line with international protection standards and, more in general, a reform of the current Dublin system.
The campaign's organizers said that, in order to support the campaign, it is important to follow its social media channels, promoting its messages and content under the hashtag #BeyondTheBorders and actively taking part by writing in the contracts section of the website to report stories, cases or situations through the project #BeyondTheBorders.
