Some 15 migrants have been reported missing after they called for help from the Evros river, at the border between Greece and Turkey, Greek authorities were quoted as saying by local media.
Water levels were very high due to rainstorms over the past few days. Firefighters in particular immediately started search operations after the distress call to the 112 pan-European emergency number. They have not found anybody so far.
The Evros river divides the two countries in north-east Greece. The number of migrants attempting to cross this part of the border is on the rise after the effective shutdown of the Aegean route following the EU-Turkey deal in 2016.
Last month, a woman and her two children drowned in the Evros river.
