A program to provide food and ''essential services'' to the Trek Sikka migrant center in Tripoli and one in Sorman was launched this week in the presence of Italian ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Perrone.
Anti-trafficking efforts, 'improve migrants' lives'
The ceremony held in Tripoli on Tuesday was announced via the Twitter account of the diplomatic office. The embassy stressed that Italy is stepping up its activities - alongside the Libyan interior ministry agency against clandestine immigration (DCIM), Italian NGOs and the UNHCR - against human trafficking and to ''improve the lives of migrants''. There is collaboration with the DCIM to improve conditions in the migrant centers, Perrone said during his visit to Trek Sikka on Tuesday.
NGOs and UNHCR to help
The humanitarian assistance provided for by the program is provided by NGOs, underscored Perrone, referring to Italian NGOs receiving funding after a public competition launched by the Italian Cooperation. Italy is taking on a role of spokesperson for the international community in this field and is facilitating the UNHCR's work - for example - at the Trek Sikka transit center due to Italian mediation with the Libyan authorities.
At the social level, Ambassador Perrone said during the visit, there is also the "Solidarity Bridge" project, which has got aid to cities such as Gars Garabulli, Zuara and Sabrata. The ceremony at the Sorman migrant center reportedly took place on Wednesday, with the arrival of the humanitarian aid expected on Thursday.
