There have already been two infants reported dead after the boat capsized. Some survivors were taken to Italy, others were returned to Libya.
There are 21 people missing and feared dead after a wooden boat traveling from Libya to Italy capsized, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Tuesday.
The wooden boat was traveling along with a rubber dinghy. There were 51 people on the wooden boat when it capsized on Saturday. Reuters is reporting that there were two deceased infants discovered on board, meaning the death toll from the capsized boat will likely increase to 23. The remaining people on the wooden boat, as well as the 132 people on the rubber dinghy were rescued from the waters.
Some of the survivors were taken to the port of Pozzallo in Italy, while other survivors were sent back to Libya.
Crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Italy continues to be a popular, yet dangerous route for migrants and refugees attempting to enter Europe. The IOM says 421 people have either died or gone missing on the route so far in 2018.
