According to the EU Commission, the repatriation of rejected Iraqi asylum seekers could be significantly simplified, as reported by the dpa news agency. Authorities in Brussels suggested on Monday that, after the Iraqi security forces' victory against the terrorist militia, "Islamic State," there are plans to open a dialogue on the issue of migration with the government in Baghdad. It is claimed that such talks could lead to a simplification of the procedures for the identification and return of Iraqi nationals who have been denied asylum in Europe.

In addition to talks, the EU Commission is proposing to intensively support efforts to establish a stable and democratic system of government in Iraq. Important goals under such an initiative would be assisting in the reconciliation of various ethnic groups, as well as establishing an independent judicial system, according to dpa.

Under the auspices of the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, these goals are intended to form the basis of a new strategy for stabilizing Iraq. Further talks on Iraq between EU foreign ministers will be held on January 22.

The Islamic State overran large parts of Iraq and Syria, reaching the peak of its power in 2014 after it captured the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. These developments led directly to a dramatic increase in the number of Iraqi asylum seekers traveling to Europe.
