The central police department of Bari, located in Italy's southern Puglia region, has recently inaugurated a new waiting room designed for those who need the services of the immigration office. The new facility is designed to stop long queues from forming outside.
The new waiting room was inaugurated on December 22 with those in mind who have an appointment at the immigration office of the city's central police department. It might seem like only a small initiative but for those on the ground it will make a significant difference.
"This room is a drop in the ocean but it is important. It is a garrison of civilization, solidarity, humanity and hosting," Mayor Vito Leccese stressed during the opening ceremony of the dedicated space.
Local Prefect Francesco Russo added to that statement the "true meaning of hosting is dignity, and this inauguration is a key sign of a territory that knows how to welcome," highlighting the importance that southern Italy has played at the forefront of migration for years.
'A garrison of civilization'
The new waiting room can seat 28 people and also features a space designed for children; the municipal administration will gift children's books and toys to the facility to keep the little ones occupied.
The space will allow immigrants who need to wait to file an application or to collect a residence permit to wait for their turn indoors -- instead of forming long lines outside the facility in all kinds of weather conditions.
The room will have the same opening hours as the immigration office itself.
The central police department said in a statement published on its website that the new waiting room "represents a concrete step aimed at improving the quality of services offered to foreign citizens, guaranteeing adequate and functional spaces; a space conceived to welcome, inform and accompany users."
"The initiative is part of the State police's wider commitment to promoting security that also implies listening, respecting and looking at everybody's needs, in the awareness that inclusion and hosting are key for civil cohabitation and a more cohesive community", it added.
