Turin's city council and the police headquarters have signed an agreement for data exchange regarding foreigners' residency information.

An agreement was signed at the Turin prefect's office for a trial data exchange regarding stay permit s and residency information held on foreign nationals that have residency or live in the Piedmont regional capital.

The agreement, signed on October 22, aims to make information sharing between the police headquarters and the city council more efficient and transparent, especially with regards to the issuance and renewal of stay permits, the statement noted.

First of its kind in Italy

Prefect Donato Cafagna commented that he believed aligining the two office's databases would make police checks "more efficient."

"Turin is the first city in Italy to approve an agreement of this type to link registry office databases and those of the police headquarters," registry office services counciller Francesco Tresso said.

Police commissioner Paolo Sirna was present at the signing of the agreement.

MoU to be renewed on an annual basis

On the basis of the agreement, the Turin city council will transmit registration information every two weeks to the police headquarters.

In addition, there will be a channel kept open between the two offices, so that the police headquarters can communicate with the municipality about the stay permits they have issued. That way, any discrepancies between home addresses and registry office information can be detected and dealt with.

Police personnel will be able to access consultation platform linked to the town council's database.The police headquarters will, on a monthly basis, send to the municipality a list of stay permits issued and delivered to foreign nationals living in Turin.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will last a year and will be renewable.
