The lifeless body of a 27-year-old Algerian man arrived in Sardinia on a dinghy with ten migrants of the same nationality. Police arrested two alleged human smugglers.
In recent days, a small boat with ten migrants on board of Algerian nationality arrived at the beach of Porto Pino in Sardinia. On the small dinghy, there was the lifeless body of a 27-year-old originally from Annaba, whose body was identified by the man's sister, who was on the dinghy. The migrants were transferred to a First Assistance Shelter Center (CPA) in Monastir.
The two alleged human smugglers were found holding 3,500 euros in cash
The investigation of the mobile squad of the police allowed to identify the two alleged human smugglers who were arrested a few days later in Cagliari, after a brief attempt to flee from the shelter center of Monastir.
They are now charged with aiding and abetting illegal migration and nautical homicide for making the crossing without sufficient safety measures, which might have prevented the tragedy.
The two men are now being held at the prison in Uta.
According to the reconstruction of the events made by the agents of the Police Headquarters in Cagliari, the two Algerians -- who were found in possession of three cell phones and approximately 3,500 euros in cash -- were manning the small fiberglass boat.
The boat was only 6 meters long, and it had left from Annaba, Algeria, on October 8.
From the account of the seven migrants who were on the boat, the investigators learned that with the transport to Sardinia, the human smugglers earned approximately 25,000 euros in total.
Death after head trauma due to impact with the high waves
The crossing to the Sardinian coast was left to the two human smugglers who, according to witness accounts collected, manned the ship at high speed. At around 2 am, after approximately two hours of navigation, the violent impact with the waves caused a strong backlash, and one of the migrants hit the head against the hull and suffered a bad head injury, which was fatal.
Despite the wound and the proximity to the Algerian coastline, the human smugglers did not call for help and continued on their crossing to Sardinia, where the young man arrived already dead.
From one of the seized cell phones from the two Algerian citizens, a video was also extrapolated. The video showed the two men manning the boat, and it documented the last moments of life of the deceased migrant.
