In Italy, the President of the National Foreign Workers' Association of the Christian Movement of Laborers (MCL) asked the Italian Interior Ministry to work more closely together with stakeholder to speed up the issuance of residency permits in Italy.
In a letter addressed to Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Paolo Ragusa, the president of the MCL, stressed that "(t)he current system, managed in a way that is not streamlined on Italian territory, creates unacceptable delays and enormous difficulties for thousands of foreign citizens, with heavy repercussions on their daily working and professional lives."
"The problem affecting the booking system for appointments to receive or renew the residency permit at police stations has reached a critical level which is no longer acceptable," he said.
"The difficulty, or rather the impossibility, of obtaining an appointment in a reasonable time not only violates the principles of a good administration and rapidity, but it also generates an atmosphere of uncertainty and frustration," Ragusa further argued.

Solutions at hand
Ragusa suggested that "(t)he cooperation among representative associations of foreign workers who work daily side by side migrants ... have the professional expertise and experience to support the police stations in managing the dossiers, and in particular, in the crucial phase of booking appointments and managing them."
"Giving these institutions the assignment of assisting foreign citizens would not only alleviate the amount of work for these offices, it would also guarantee a more efficient, transparent, and humane process," explained Ragusa.
