The UN migration agency IOM recently launched a new fund to collect donations from Muslims, in particular during Ramadan, for displaced people around the world.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently launched its Islamic Philanthropy Fund. The goal, the organization said, is "to harness the power of Islamic charitable giving to support some of the world's most vulnerable people."

IOM said that the fund marked "a significant milestone" for the organization as it "is developing innovative ways to provide lifesaving assistance to more than 75 million people uprooted by conflict, disaster, and insecurity."

The fund's launch was announced just before the start of Ramadan, at an event held at the United Nations House in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During the launch event, IOM signed memorandums of understanding with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy.

IOM Director General Amy Pope said the fund was intended "as a means to help us engage Muslims around the world and channel their contributions through a trusted and efficient platform, maximizing their positive impact."

In its first year, the fund will reportedly focus on providing aid to people displaced by the war in Sudan. The conflict has triggered one of the world's largest displacement crises, with more than 11.5 million people internally displaced and nearly 30 million in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
