A 40-year-old man from Pakistan found with other migrants on a cliff off Lampedusa in the afternoon of Friday, March 8, died during a crossing that started in Zuwara, Libya, the previous Wednesday, according to a relative of the victim who was traveling with him.

The Pakistani man was traveling with 46 others who were rescued by coast guards on Friday (March 8) off the Sicilian island. The victim's relative who was travelling on the same boat that had departed from Libya told a psychologist in Lampedusa that the man "had a heart attack" during the crossing.

A medical examination carried out on his body, ordered by prosecutors in the Sicilian city of Agrigento, found no signs of violence or a violent death, well-informed sources said.

The man's body has been taken to the morgue of Lampedusa's Cala Pisana cemetery.

Deceased migrant had paid between 4,000 and 6,000 euros for the crossing

The prefecture of Agrigento will try to find a burial spot for the victim in a cemetery in the area of Agrigento, once all proceedings have been completed, official sources have said.

Meanwhile, the Agrigento flying squad questioned the other passengers of the boat to determine what happened during the crossing. The Pakistani citizen was traveling on the 10-meter-long vessel with 46 others and had paid between 4,000 and 6,000 euros for the crossing.

Overall, five landings, for a total of 234 people, were reported on Lampedusa on Friday, March 8 after migrant boat sightings and rescue operations resumed the previous day amid improved weather conditions.

In the night between March 7 and 8, a boat carrying 52 people from Bangladesh and Egypt reached the commercial pier of the island while finance police apprehended along a provincial road 29 others, including a woman, who had landed on the Isola dei Conigli beach.

All the migrants were taken to the local hotspot, which saw the number of guests increase from the two people hosted at 1 pm on March 7, who were rescued by the Sea Watch 5 migrant rescue ship, to the 135 who were staying at the facility in the morning of March 8.

A reported 120 people were subsequently taken by ferry to Porto Empedocle, Sicily, at the order of the prefecture of Agrigento.

Migrant boats have resumed journeys from Libya and Tunisia

Another migrant landing was recorded on Lampedusa in the night between March 7 and 8 after port authorities rescued 138 people who were traveling on an 11-meter-long vessel.

The group -- mainly comprising Bangladeshis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Syrians and Palestinians -- included 21 women and 17 minors, officials said. The unseaworthy vessel, which had departed from Sabratha, Libya, had been left adrift in the Mediterranean. All passengers were taken to the hotspot in the Imbriacola district, which was hosting 383 guests on the morning of March 9 after six landings recorded the previous day, for a total of 259 arrivals.

Vessels have resumed crossings both from Libya and Tunisia.

The last two boats rescued on March 8 by finance police and the coast guards were transporting respectively 14 and 67 people from Senegal, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Gambia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt and Pakistan.

"We are just at the beginning of a new season of landings which we expect to be, yet again, complex and difficult," said Roberto Ammatuna, the mayor of Pozzallo which last week registered the arrival of rescue vessel Sea Watch 5 with 51 migrants and the body of a 17-year-old boy. The boat had been initially ordered to go to the Emilia Romagna port city of Ravenna, on the Adriatic Sea, but was subsequently assigned Pozzallo, in Sicily, as a safe port of landing.
