A migrant reception center in the eastern German city of Suhl will not take any new arrivals until it reaches normal capacity of 1,400 people, officials said over the weekend. Some 1,600 migrants were accommodated in the center on Sunday.

An initial migrant reception center in the city of Suhl, located in the eastern German state of Thuringia, has closed its doors to new arrivals after the facility reached its capacity over the past few days.

Thuringia's migration ministry announced the changes over the weekend after 130 migrants arrived unannounced on Friday evening, just two days after 200 had arrived on Wednesday, public German broadcaster Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk reported Sunday.

More migrants then arrived in buses on Saturday.

The Suhl facility has an official capacity of 1,400 people, but local officials say it is only actually possible to provide adequate care for 800 migrants at the center. Some 1,600 were accommodated there on Sunday, dpa reported, pushing the facility to its limits.

New arrivals will now be redirected to the nearby localities of Eisenberg and Hermsdorf.

State Migration Minister Doreen Denstädt (Green Party) said the reception facility's closure to new arrivals was necessary to lower the burden on the center.

The admission stop will apply until the fire protection limit of 1,400 people is reached once again, a spokeswoman for the state administration office said.
