Alleged migrant smugglers in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein attempted a dangerous chase across several highways, trying to evade a police check. Two suspects were eventually apprehended.

The police in Kiel identified the two alleged smugglers as Iraqi nationals, who at the time of the police chase were under the influence of drugs. It added that in the back of the car they found four Iraqi nationals who appeared to be terrified.

A police patrol wanted to check the car on the highway from Hamburg to the northern city of Kiel on Monday (Spetember 4). But instead of slowing down for the police check, the driver of the vehicle apparently accelerated in a bid to evade the check, according to police.

The driver sped across several highways, at times driving in the wrong direction and disregarding all rules of the highway code. According to the police, several vehicles had to maneuver around the smugglers' car.

Eventually, the driver collided with two other cars at a construction site, at which point the police managed to stop the car.

The 34-year-old driver and the 28-year-old man in the passenger seat were later detained by police.

The passengers in the backseat later testified that they had asked the driver to stop. However, the driver had reportedly threatened them with violence.
