The humanitarian ship Humanity 1 arrived in the Italian port of Ancona this week with 106 rescued migrants onboard. The local mayor has lashed out, saying that "the city is full".

The humanitarian ship Humanity 1 arrived in the Italian port of Ancona on Wednesday (August 16) carrying 106 people who had been rescued from waters of the Libyan search and rescue zone.

Among the rescued migrants were a pregnant woman and 14 minors, as well as six-month-old twins. This is the second arrival in the capital of the Marche region for the ship operated by the German NGO United 4 Rescue after one on July 15, when about 200 migrants disembarked, and the sixth since the beginning of the year in Ancona by humanitarian rescue ships.

After an initial health check onboard, the 106 people were to be taken by coach to PalaBrasili in Collemarino for identification procedures. From there they were to be sent to reception facilities across the entire Marche region.

'City is full' says mayor

"Ancona is full," mayor Daniele Silvetti told journalists at wharf 19 of the port during the disembarking of the migrants from the ship. Silvetti, from the Forza Italia party, leads the first center-right council in the city's history.

"Four hundred migrants on three ships in two months is a significant number," the mayor added, noting that he had discussed the issue with the interior ministry undersecretary, Emanuele Prisco.

"We are not trying to evade reception duties," Silvetti said. "However, facilities are under pressure because in addition to the regular work they must deal with these exceptional cases."

Meanwhile, on board of Humanity 1 volunteers had used drawings to explain to the 106 shipwreck survivors how the reception system in Italy works and their rights in Europe, including the right to request political asylum.
