In order to promote language training and integration, the city on the Adriatic coast is offering free Italian lessons for foreigners and immigrants. The courses aim to accommodate adults with a low level of schooling.
The Ancona city council has announced that it will make free Italian lessons available for foreign citizens and refugees who are legally residents in the municipality in order to promote their education and integration.
Three levels of learning for adults
The Italian courses aim in particular to "meet the needs of adults with low levels of schooling, including migrant women who have arrived in Italy through family reunification procedures," the city council said in a statement. All foreign citizens who are legal residents in Ancona, including holders of refugee status or other forms of international protection, are eligible to participate; asylum seekers, however, will not be allowed to enroll. Three separate modules will be offered based on the language level at entry. The deadline for enrolment is September 25.
'Foster communication skills in Italian'
Ancona is a city with just over 100,000 residents on the Adriatic coast in western Italy. It's the capital of the Marche region. The city is taking part in the project FAMI ICAM 2014-2020 (progetto FAMI-Fondo Asili, Migrazione Integrazione - ICAM-Italiano Cantiere Aperto Marche) and has committed to "facilitating the promotion and spread of literacy activities in Italian in order to foster communication skills in Italian and support migrants living in the area on their road to progressive and effective autonomy".
