The annual report of the Italian Coast Guard and Port Authorities was presented in Rome on June 21, highlighting migration-related activities from 2022.

The annual report of the Italian Coast Guard and Port Authorities highlights that some 901 migration-related incidents were coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard in 2022. These reportedly resulted in a total of 57,235 people being rescued.

Vast majority of rescued had left from Libya

The vast majority of those rescued had departed for Italy from Libya's coast — in total 38,761 cases. In addition, some 10,183 came from Tunisia, 8,134 from various places in the Middle East, and 157 from Algeria.

Commanding general Nicola Carlone said during the presentation of the report that 2022 was "characterized by hopes linked to the overcoming of the pandemic that were abruptly interrupted by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and its severe human, social, and economic effects as well as a massive resumption of migration flows from Africa and Asia towards Europe."

Carlone added that the Italian Coast Guard had its "eyes on the future and the numerous challenges of the maritime sector, in order to be always at the level of the expectations of those using it and citizens."
