Next week will see the return of the Cooking #WithRefugees Festival in the city of Athens, Greece from 18 to 22 June, introducing new gastronomic experiences and showcasing the power of inclusion.
On the occasion of World Refugee Day, which is on June 20, Greek and refugee chefs will team up in four restaurants to serve favorite dishes inspired by Syrian, Afghan, Ukrainian and Cameroonian cuisine, for a special Festival organized by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and partners.
"Through the universal language of food, this year's edition seeks to shine a spotlight on the skills and talents of refugees and demonstrate that refugee integration is the most impactful way to support them restart their lives and actively contribute to their host communities," said the Greek arm of the UNHCR via a media release.
Among the highlights, Mariia Borysenko will kick off the festival at 'Shedia Home', where her traditional Ukrainian Varenyky and her favorite Kiev Cake will blend with the flavors of chef Kostas Lykouras.
Elsewhere, Diane Priscille Ndzouatchoua from Cameroon is testing the recipe of her renowned Poulet DG with the Greek chef Agapi Miheli. Dianne and Agapi will mix their heartwarming flavors at the new generation fast food restaurant 'Lotza tis Geitonias' in Exarchia.
Ilektra Rigkou and Helen Saradis, head chefs of Lost Athens in Pangrati, will cook with Roya Saifi, while the Syrian aromatic recipes of Adel Boshi will mix with the beloved Greek tastes of chef Gogo Delogianni making up a full menu that will tempt everyone at 'Stoa Kerameikos'.

The Cooking #WithRefugees Festival, which began in 2019 and is now into its fifth edition, is organized with the support of organizations that help refugees broaden their skillset, get empowered, access opportunities and find their way into the labor market. The project's backers and sponsors include METAdrasi, Saffron Kitchen Project and Elahe Penhan, as well as Athens Insider Magazine.
World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe. It falls each year on 20 June and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
The 2023 theme of World Refugee Day is "hope away from home" and focuses on solutions for refugees and the power of inclusion.
