Police said that as well as 24 Syrian nationals, there were 10 Afghans, three Palestinians, four Iranians, While Crete does not have any migrant camps or extensive facilities for dealing with the renewed influx of refugees in and around the Aegean this summer, authorities on the island recently decided to begin an official integration program to accept small numbers of migrants.A deal was signed between the Greek government, Crete's development agency and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in July, paving the way to use 125 empty apartments to accommodate approximately 750 refugees.According to the specifications of the program, the total number of refugees is expected not to exceed 2,000 by the end of 2017.The Cretan local authorities have been praised for coming forward to initiate taking on their share of responsibility for the migrant issue which continues to affect the whole country.

Migrants killed on Greek border

Meanwhile in Northern Greece, authorities have announced that two migrants who crossed the border from Turkey illegally were killed after being hit by a passenger train. Police said that the two men, whose identities have yet to be confirmed, were struck in the Evros border region on Sunday night. The train was traveling between the cities of Alexandroupolis and Dikaia. According to local media reports, two men had been walking along the tracks when they were hit, and a police investigation is currently underway.Refugees and migrants crossing into Greece along the land border with Turkey frequently use train tracks as a guide to find their way into towns or cities.
