This picture shows some Syrian refugees who arrived at Rome's Fiumcino airport from Lebanon on August 29 with the use of humanitarian corridors.
There were 35 people in all - men, women, children, and entire families - who made it to Italy as part of the project sponsored by the Community of Sant'Egidio, the Federation of Evangelical Churches in Italy (FCEI) and the Waldensian Table.
With this addition of this new group, a total of 900 people have safely and legally reached Italy since February 2016, thanks to an agreement with the Italian foreign and interior ministries. Shortly after disembarking the Alitalia flight from Beirut, the migrants were accompanied by border police to a special area where individual arrival procedures, including identification and digital fingerprints, were taken care of. Among the migrants were Joseph, 6, and Geena, 4.
The Community of Sant'Egidio said on Twitter that the children are from Homs. "When they were born, there was already war. Today they start a new life in Italy," said Sant'Egidio. The refugees will be divided among reception centres and families who have already been chosen throughout Italy, in order to begin resettlement and integration.
