UNICEF Italia's spokesperson, Andrea Iacomini, has harshly criticized European countries following reports that a child froze to death in the border region between Belarus and Poland. "We can't just say 'enough' -- now we are waiting for a concrete gesture," he said.
UNICEF Italia's spokesperson, Andrean Iacomini, on Friday (November 19) said European countries cannot just express outrage but must implement the Convention on the Rights of the Child, following reports that a one-year-old migrant died in the border area between Belarus and Poland.
"All European countries have signed the convention for the rights of children and adolescence" and, if reports that a child froze to death at the border between Poland and Belarus are confirmed, now they "can't just express outrage, they must implement what they ratified," said Iacomini.
"The EU has let children die at sea and now we are leaving children to die in the cold. We can't just say 'stop'. We are waiting for concrete gestures," he noted.
The spokesperson went on to say that he can't bear to hear more "words of outrage from institutions worldwide that fill newspapers with clichés when these things occur."
He cited in particular the case of Syrian three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, whose lifeless body was found on a Turkish beach in 2015, becoming a symbol of the refugee crisis. In that case too, many expressed outrage but nothing happened, he said.
'Aylan is watching you'
"We don't have the right to say 'enough' -- the parents and grandparents of children on that border must say so," Iacomini said.
"We Europeans can't afford to say the word 'enough' anymore because we did nothing to prevent these things from happening. Aylan is watching you. You have to respond to Aylan's father!", stated Iacomini.
Speaking about World Children's Day, celebrated on November 20, the spokesperson concluded saying that, "in a day, we will be celebrating the charter with which all States of Europe and the world pledge not to harm any child -- a pledge disregarded by letting kids get slaughtered in Syria, Yemen, letting them die at sea and in the cold. It is unacceptable."
