The Italian interior ministry has made 100 scholarships available for the academic year 2017/2018 to refugee students or students with international protection. The deadline for application is July 16, 2017.

The initiative "represents an important and particularly significant step on the road to integration bacause it aims to intercept the needs of a vulnerable group, namely young students who have been forced to interrupt their studies in their country of origin," the interior ministry said.

The scholarships are awarded by the university and entitles students to exemption from taxes and university contributions, accommodation services (boarding and lodging) and access to university facilities (centers, libraries).

Criteria for application

The study grants are reserved for students with international protection on fulfilment of certain criteria. Applicants must have already won the call for applications for the academic year 2016/2017 or have enrolled for the first time in the Italian university system, in a bachelor's or master's degree or in a PhD programme.

Necessary documentation

For enrollment to a bachelor's degree, the Declaration of Value - an official document in Italian issued by the Italian diplomatic authorities certifying the authenticity and validity of the documentation presented - is required. This is not required for access to master degrees and PhD courses. Both categories of candidates must apply via the web site http://borsespi.laziodisu.it by midnight on July 16.
