A boat carrying 58 migrants ran aground off the coast of Chios over the bank holiday weekend without any casualties. Three Ukrainian citizens on board, who are suspected to be traffickers, have been held for questioning.

Port authorities were alerted to the presence of the high speed craft in the area of Vatos in the early hours on Monday morning, and according to local reports on the island the vessel ran itself a ground on some rocks as the coast guard approached it. Local police have yet to release any further information. Meanwhile in related developments on Chios, the latest figures released on budget spent from the Eastern Aegean Regional Office for immigration showed that the lion's share of the local-specific funds have gone there. According to the figures which detail the budget spent for 2015 and 2016 released by the Deputy Chief of Administrative and Financial Services of the North Aegean Region,Chrysanthos Argyriou, the total spent was 313,488 euros. Of that amount, Chios received 252,160 euros. Other Greek islands such as Lesvos were funded to the tune of 38,795 euros, while Samos received 22,533 euros.
