The central Italian city Macerata witnessed protests against refugees earlier this week, when activists from the newly formed "Macerata ai Maceratesi," [Macerata for the city's residents] held a flash mob in front of the Catholic relief organization Caritas' office.
The protesters carried a banner with the name of the committee on it and left flyers that read, "The only sector that seems unaffected by the crisis in the city is that of services related to taking in the so-called migrants, who are given food, lodging, telephone top-ups, cigarettes, pocket money and other rights and aid that many citizens at this point in time can only dream of."
"Following checks by the authorities in charge, it seems that not even seven percent of asylum seekers are granted the status of political refugees. The rest are simply clandestine migrants," the statement said.
