The crew in rescue organization SOS Mediterranee's ship "Aquarius" was in for a surprise earlier this week. As they rescued migrants traveling to Europe in rubber dinghies, a Nigerian woman gave birth to a baby.
Mercy, whose parents are Nigerian, is the fourth baby born aboard the Aquarius, after Destiné Alex, born on May 25, 2016, Newman Otas, born on September 12, 2016 and Emeka Laska Favour, born on December 11, 2016. Including Mercy, 947 refugees landed on Monday morning in Catania on board the Aquarius. There were 818 men and 128 women, of which 10 were pregnant. The ship had 248 minors 248, including 214 who were travelling alone. Most of them came from Bangladesh, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast and Guinea (as well as other sub Saharan African countries). They were rescued between Saturday night and Sunday morning from seven dinghies and two wooden vessels off Libya's coast in nine separate operations that lasted 15 hours.
