A 20-year-old Ghanian migrant killed himself last week in a Caritas facility in Cremona. He was visiting a friend in the city and was hosted temporarily in the facility.
The director of the Cremona Caritas, Antonio Pezzetti, said that the young man had been taken to a hospital by a friend on Wednesday evening (July 17) for psychological unease.
''Around 11 PM, while he was waiting for medical tests, he left. No one would have foreseen what happened,'' he added. The young man's body was found at 4 a.m. in the stairwell of the facilities by one of the guests.
The diocese expressed its condolences to his family in Ghana and said that many youths in their facilities end up with psychological problems due to long waits prior to receiving official documents allowing them to stay in the country after many difficulties in their ''journeys of hope'' towards a much-hoped-for better life in EU.
