A project called "Work at the Bar" in Italy's capital Rome, starting in late February, trains young migrants to work as baristas and waiters. The goal of the initiative is to give foreign minors and young adults the chance to achieve social and work independence.
Starting on February 25th, a new Italian training programme called "Work at the Bar" will teach young migrants the necessary skills to work as coffee bar counter attendants and waiters. The project is led by the Il Faro Foundation and sponsored by the Programma Integra cooperative.
The on-the-job training, which is in line with the objectives set forth in the Italian "Never Alone" project, aims to accompany foreign unaccompanied minors in specific training programmes and help them move towards social and professional autonomy. In a statement, Programma Integra said the "Work at the Bar" program offers professional training to those intending to work in gastronomy.
The 100-hour training course will be conducted by the Il Faro Foundation with the goal to develop participants' abilities in communicating with clients by using principles of hospitality and order management, organizing service in the bar and in dining room areas, using necessary tools and utensils, preparing coffee bar products, understanding the main service styles in use as well as carrying out cleaning tasks including sanitising tools and work spaces.
Requirements for participation
The training includes three modules: 60 hours at the bar, 36 hours of waiting tables and four hours of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). Admission to the program, which starts on February 25th and ends on March 29th, is reserved to unaccompanied minors and young migrants between the ages of 17 and 19 based in Rome. The number of participants is limited to 15 people. The admission process includes a candidate selection program by the training company and jobs department of Programma Integra.
