Hundreds of people have been relocated in Tripoli after they were trapped in fighting between rival groups. About 400 migrants had been abandoned without food or water in government-run detention centers when their guards fled the violence.
The United Nations and aid workers said Thursday that all of the migrants had been taken from the centers in the Ain Zara area to a "safer place", away from the fighting. The migrants were mainly Eritrean, Ethiopian and Somali nationals, Reuters reports.
However, a Sudanese migrant who has left Ain Zara told InfoMigrants that many people were still waiting there. The migrant said detainees had been taken to Abu Salim, but it was not clear whether that referred to the district of southern Tripoli or a prison of the same name.
Rival authorities in Tripoli have been engaged in violent clashes since the weekend. Officials say at least 26 people have been killed and dozens injured in the fighting, despite a ceasefire proposal by government-backed militias on Wednesday.
Ain Zara in the south of the city is part of a network of state facilities in which Libyan authorities detain migrants who have been caught by the coastguard while trying to reach Italy by boat.
Libya is the main departure point in North Africa for migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.
The number of crossings has declined sharply since Italy provided the coastguard with more boats and made deals with local smuggler groups last year.
