The aid is Brussels' response to the migrant crisis in Bosnia. The country is currently hosting around 1,800 migrants.
The European Commission has approved a plan to give Bosnia-Herzegovina 1.5 million euros in humanitarian aid as a response to the migrant crisis in the country.
"The number of refugees and migrants arriving in Bosnia-Herzegovina has increased and we must act quickly," the commissioner for humanitarian aid, Christos Stylianides, said. "We are working to help Sarajevo manage the situation and to provide assistance to the most vulnerable refugees and migrants" with "emergency shelters, food and medical aid, as well as protection."
The European Commission has provided humanitarian aid worth 30.5 million euros since the start of the refugee crisis in the western Balkans.
Around 1,800 migrants currently in Bosnia
Authorities estimate that some 1,800 migrants are currently living in Bosnia. A major problem has been the failure of neighboring countries to respect readmission agreements.
Bosnia's security minister, Dragan Mektic, reported that a total of 5,065 migrants have entered Bosnia since the start of the year. This includes 437 migrants who applied for asylum, although authorities have not yet approved any asylum requests.
Last weekend the number of irregular entries increased with a reported 350 people entering the country. Migrants have found a new route which authorities plan to shut down. Border police will have an additional 60 officers from the Republika Srpska and 15 from the Distrct of Brcko.
Mektic stressed that this year 3,500 migrants were refused entry at the border and anyone considered a threat to security was refused entry into the country.
Former precinct used to host migrants
Mektic announced that the former precinct of Usivak in Hadzivci south of Sarajevo will be used to host migrants. He said that the new housing facility will help authorities deal with different needs and avoid overcrowding. "We currently have no emergency, everything is taking place within institutions," he said. Mektic also said that migrants arrive on a daily basis but the number of migrants has decreased over the past 15 days, expect during weekends.
