In Spain, the People's Party and the government of the Canary Islands presented a united front to face the "migration crisis" with an agreement for the transfer of underage migrants present in the archipelago to the other 12 regions and the two autonomous cities governed by the People's Party.

The agreement was announced on Tuesday (September 10) by the leader of the People's Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, at a press conference in Tenerife with the regional president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.

Feijoo noted that the document is called "Action Plan to Offset the Migration Chaos". It has 9 points, and it will be sent to Madrid.

"We would like for the central government to join in the vision of a State that the plan reflects" noted Feijoo.

Feijóo, along with the far-right Vox and Junts for Catalonia, had vetoed an amendment proposed by the Socialist government in July. The amendment aimed to modify Article 35 of the law on foreigners to allow for the redistribution of approximately 5,500 unaccompanied minors from the Canary Islands to other Iberian regions.

Feijóo reiterated that his proposal seeks to "provide an integral response" to "the current migration crisis" and to "the waves of migrants arriving through the Canary Islands and Ceuta".

Feijóo mentioned Italy as an example of how policies implemented by Giorgia Meloni's government have reduced irregular migration through agreements with migrants' countries of origin and transit. "Italy reduced the number of migrant arrivals on its coast by 60 percent, while in Spain, the number of arrivals is increasing by 55 percent," he highlighted.

"Spain is the worst country in terms of border control, and the Canary Islands and Ceuta are the most affected," he added.

The People's Party obtained that Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez speak before Congress next week to address the issue of the emergency in the Canary Islands and Ceuta, with a request voted on Tuesday by Vox and the mixed group with the People's Party.

The document, agreed upon with Fernando Clavijo of the Canary Coalition, which governs in partnership with the People's Party, outlined the initiatives the People's Party wants from the progressive government. These include calling for a conference of presidents on migration policies, declaring a state of national migration emergency, and including a proposal in the reform bill concerning foreigners that requires the central government to take charge of the funding and assistance for minor migrants when the regions reach over 100 percent of their shelter capacities.
