Border police in the northeastern Italian city of Trieste arrested nine people between May 20 and June 4.

Trieste border police made nine arrests over the span of two weeks after controls were instituted along the city's border with Slovenia in an operation to fight irregular immigration.

Three suspects were arrested on charges of aiding and abetting irregular immigration. They include a 27-year-old Romanian citizen and two Turkish citizens, aged 36 and 29.

A 31-year-old woman with a criminal record and various identities was detained after an arrest order was issued by prosecutors in the city of Bolzano. The woman, who reached Italy by bus, was served a nearly 24-year sentence on charges of crimes against property.

Police also arrested a 34-year-old Moldovan citizen on charges of criminal association and aiding and abetting immigration and prostitution. He was served a sentence of six and a half years of detention.

The man entered Italy on foot from the Fernetti border crossing and was detained by police due to an arrest warrant issued by prosecutors in Lazio. He was taken to prison in Trieste.

Police also apprehended two men with criminal records and two people who were not supposed to return to Italy for another five years.
