The Humanity One, the vessel operated by German NGO SOS Humanity, reached the port of Marina di Carrara (Massa Carrara) in the morning of May 20 with 70 migrants on board.

The ship, which arrived at 8:20 am local time, sailed to the central Italian port after rescuing the migrants between Thursday and Friday (May 16-17) in the southern Mediterranean in two different operations. Twenty-eight people were rescued in the first operation and 42 in the second.

Third landing of 2024, 12th since last year

It was the 12th migrant landing for the port of Marina di Carrara since 2023 and the third in 2024. It was also the second time that the Humanity 1 docked in Marina di Carrara. The vessel previously reached the Tuscan port on February 3 with 64 migrants on board.

The prefecture of Massa Carrara coordinated the disembarkation of migrants and subsequent procedures. Many volunteers were at the port to welcome the migrants, together with health professionals and security forces, along with port authority personnel.

The migrants were first checked on board the vessel and then taken by bus to the nearby exhibition center of Imm Carrara Fiere for subsequent identification procedures and medical checkups. After being given food and drinks, they will be taken to hosting facilities selected across Italy.
