What does a migrant boat rescue in the central Mediterranean look like? InfoMigrants witnessed a rescue operation up close on February 5, 2024.

The crew of the Geo Barents, a search and rescue ship run by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), transferred 134 people on board to safety – including children – from a double-decker wooden boat in distress.

The audio features crew conversation between the rescuers and the ship's control center, referred to as the "bridge.”

"Orca" and "Mike" are the two motor boats that set off from the main Geo Barents vessel to locate and rescue the migrant boat.

Not all sea rescue operations are carried out the same way. An operation may look very different depending on who is rescuing the boat (and what type of boat it is), what the waves and weather conditions are like, whether anyone has fallen into the sea or whether anyone is injured.
