The migrants were rescued off the coast of the island after departing from Libya.

Some 573 migrants, including four women and two minors, were rescued by Italian Coast Guard patrol boats and others off the Italian island of Lampedusa on Monday, (November 27).

Before Monday's rescue, the island hadn't seen any new arrivals since Friday evening.

The 573 migrants are from Syria, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Ethiopia.

They were rescued off Lampedusa by patrol boats led by the Italian Coast Guard, the Italian Financial Police and Frontex.

The migrants were questioned by police about their journey from Libya and the identity of the boat's driver.
