A 20-year-old woman has given birth to a child inside a migrant reception center in Agrigento on the Italian island of Sicily. She was assisted by an on-call doctor working at the facilities who had never delivered a baby before.
The woman of sub-Saharan origins gave birth to a baby boy in the Casa dei Gabbiani migrant reception center in Agrigento on the Italian island of Sicily on Wednesday (August 2). Helping her to bring her little boy into the world was the doctor working at the facilities, Salvatore Natalello.
Following the delivery the young woman and the infant were taken by ambulance to the local emergency room at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital.
The migrant reception center, located in the Ciavolotta district, at the moment hosts about 60 migrants. The mother and her child will reportedly return to the center after being released from hospital.

Doctor speaks about helping the young woman
"There was no time. Her water broke and about 10 minutes later she brought the child into the world. There was the hand of God in this and everything went well," said 64-year-old Natalello, a general physician known in Agrigento for his work as on-call doctor.
"I had checked on the two pregnant women in the facilities. One had very slight contractions while the 20-year-old was instead fine -- nothing foreshadowed what was about to happen shortly after that. The woman's waters broke suddenly and I immediately called an ambulance," he added.
"I checked and I saw the head of the baby boy and despite the fact that this was her first birth, the woman delivered the child in a sudden manner.
"We have in the past had two women who had been raped who reacted differently after the delivery in the hospital. In this case, it was a pregnancy that the mother wanted since the young woman was concerned about the wellbeing of the infant, who cried as soon as he came into the world and continued to do so when ten minutes later we put him on the ambulance," the doctor said.

Natalello, despite his 35 years of experience, had never delivered a baby before and said that he was strongly affected by this experience at the human as well as professional level.
"I held him and held his hand and comforted him repeatedly," he said.
"I put in my professional skills but also a lot of my heart to ensure that everything went well."
The baby's father is not inside the facilities -- the mother arrived alone on Lampedusa in recent days and was transferred to Agrigento.
