The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in a joint press release on 27 July have called for an urgent resolution for refugees and migrants blocked at the borders between Tunisia and Libya.

The UNHCR and IOM "are extremely concerned for the security and well-being of a hundred migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in Tunisia who are stuck in terrible conditions following their transfer to remote and desolate areas near the country's border with Libya and Algeria. Others were sent farther," states a joint press release by the two organizations.

'Even pregnant women and children are at risk in the desert'

Many of the people were displaced from Sfax following recent unrest in the city, while others were transfered from different urban centers all over Tunisia, explains the press note.

The UN organizations note that there are also women, including some pregnant ones, and children among those displaced. "They are trapped in the desert, exposed to extreme heat, and without shelter, water, or food access."

UNHCR and IOM stress the need for humanitarian assistance and long-term solutions.

Meanwhile some loss of human life has already been communicated. "This tragedy taking place now must end. In these circumstances, saving human lives must be the priority and those who are stuck must be carried to safety," continues the press note.

Appeal to countries involved to respect International obligations

The two organizations "appreciate the work of the Tunisian and Libyan Red Crescent in providing humanitarian assistance" while stressing that search and rescue efforts are urgently needed for those who remain blocked.

People in need of international protection need to be provided with the opportunity of requesting asylum, and vulnerable migrants, including human trafficking victims and unaccompanied minors, need to be sent to the appropriate services, the press release states.

Lastly, "UNHCR and OIM call on all countries involved to abide by their legal international obligations with regard to migrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers" and they affirm that "we are ready to support authorities to resolve the current situation in a humane and principled way that respects everyone's rights."
