The Pakistani hockey player Shahida Raza set sail from Turkey, headed for Italy, in the hope of a better future. But her hopes were shattered off the coasts of Calabria in the Ionic Sea on February 26 when she perished in one of the deadliest shipwrecks off the Italian coast in recent years.
Nothing could be done for Shahida Raza, the 27-year-old Pakistani hockey player who was identified among the victims of the migrant shipwreck that happened last Sunday (February 26) in Cutro.
Even the officers of the Pakistan Hockey Federation confirmed the woman's death and expressed their condolences to her family.
Shahida Raza had represented her country at various international competitions. Raza also went by the nickname of Chintu; she had also been a soccer player.
According to her family and friends, she was going through difficult times after having divorced her husband and decided to emigrate to Europe.
Her daughter, according to what is being reported by Pakistani media, was not with her on the journey to Europe.
According to the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there were at least 20 Pakistani citizens on the boat that crashed onto some rocks, 16 of them survived, while another four are still missing.
One of the two alleged smugglers who were arrested is also of Pakistani nationality.

Part of the Hazara community, targeted by extremist groups
Shahida Raza belonged to the Hazara Sciite community and lived in the city of Quetta, in the province of Balochistan.
The Hazara community over last years has been repeatedly targeted by extremist Sunni groups, among them ISIS. Thousands of members of this group emigrated both legally and illegally to other parts of the world, including Europe.
Premier Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif this week commented on the presence of many Pakistani nationals among the victims of the shipwreck saying that "we are profoundly worried and distressed by the news of the tragic drowning of other 20 Pakistani citizens on a boat in Italy."
Sharif ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to verify the facts as soon as possible.
