Today's picture shows two simultaneous demonstrations that took place on June 30 in the same neighbourhood in Rome.
On one side, there were migrants' rights activists, including the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) and the Communist Refoundation, who took to the streets to protest against fascism and in favor of refugee arrivals.
At the same time, a group of members of the extreme right-wing party Casapound came out to advocate for Italians before foreigners. There was a heavy police presence on both sides.
The specific subject of the debate is the presence in the neighbourhood (Tiburtino III) of the temporary Red Cross centre for migrants. The centre was supposed to close in June, but the Rome city government extended its mandate.
Casapound members are calling for the centre's closure. "Let's kick them out," said one of the Casapound demonstrators. "No one considers the Italians". The group also chanted some slogans, including "structures and rights for Roma and illegals but few nursery schools for our children".
