At least 91 migrant deaths

At least 65 migrants died or were reported missing while trying to cross the Atlantic Ocean to the Canaries in January 2022, according to the UN migration agency IOM.

At least 26 migrants died or went missing on the Western Mediterranean migration route between Spain and the north African coast.

However, the actual number is likely much higher, given that many migrant deaths at sea are never recorded.
