It was founded in 1949 to house Palestinian refugees driven from their country. In Lebanon, Palestinian refugees lack certain rights. For example, they cannot own property and are barred from working in as many as 20 professions. Access to medical services and education are pressing issues as well. The situation has exacerbated since the beginning of the Syrian war. Over 1.2 million Syrian refugees have come to Lebanon, with 17,000 of them residing in the Shatila camp.
