About 3,000 foreign, unaccompanied minors have arrived this year already on Italian coasts, according to the humanitarian group, Save the Children. The Italian interior ministry has now set up a special mission to look after them.
Last year, a total of 25,846 unaccompanied children landed in Italy. The surge in arrival of minors made it necessary in 2014 to set up a mission specifically for them within the Department of Civil Liberties and Immigration in the interior ministry. The model provides for a phase of initial reception in highly specialized government facilities. In the second stage, the Asylum Seekers and Refugees Protection System (SPRAR) - only for foreign minors - takes over. The state provides for funding of 45 euros per day for the reception of every foreign unaccompanied minor. The interior ministry has arranged for support to municipalities that intend to increase the number of places available for migrant reception, including through financial contributions. The ministry has launched a competition to find new solutions for the reception of minors.
