The project was created between 2007 and 2010 in the mastic villages of the island of Chios. After having worked in various countries throughout the world, Vogiatzis returned to his beloved homeland and revisited the places from his childhood. With his camera he captured a piece of Aegean traditional culture, revealing the hidden world of the so-called "Mastihohoria" of Chios: 24 Medieval villages that became rich and famous thanks to the cultivation of a small tree that releases "tears" of an aromatic resin called Mastic that was widely used in the 14th century. In recent times however, Mastic lost its popularity and the islanders had to migrate. The photographer uses his sensitivity and talent to explore these places without being invasive. He captures the spirit of the people who inhabited the places and intuits the meaning of their lives, while masterfully directing light, shadow, wind and the scents of his homeland. He enters abandoned places with the respect of a religious pilgrim and tells of their "interior landscapes." The human figure is completely absent in the shots, but behind every absence one can feel a strong presence: abandoned objects, evident traces of a simple daily life, indelible signs that betray habits and tell of traditions, things left as if they could suddenly come back.
