The number of undocumented migrants arriving in Europe, especially via the eastern Mediterranean Sea route, has decreased, according to the EU border agency. At the same time, more are making the crossing from North Africa.
The Italian interior minister has met with Libyan leaders in Tripoli. Migration was at the top of the agenda as ministers from both countries “reaffirmed the importance of their bilateral relations.”
There are two investigations in Italy, looking in to the delayed disembarking of migrants involving former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini as defendant. The cases are now being heard by preliminary investigative judges in Sicily.
A large number of migrants, including children, were discovered on a road in northeastern Italy last week. Most of the migrants were Pakistani nationals who had traveled the "Balkan route."
UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi says Italy has promised to resume evacuations of the most vulnerable migrants and refugees from Libya. Evacuations were reduced due to the pandemic.
